Self Care is it really worth the effort?

Do bubble baths and candles spring to mind when you hear the words 'self care' or do you instantly think mindset, boundaries and rest? What if I introduced you to the concept that self care is an act in which we do, solely for ourselves as a purpose of looking after our mind, body and soul?

Are you constantly feeling overwhelmed with life? Juggling family, work commitments, social engagements and everything in between? Yip I hear you, in fact I can possibly assume your favourite saying is 'there are not enough hours in the day'.

The reasons we tend to give more of ourselves to others is:

We have poor self esteem, we are the people pleasers in life that do not value our own desires and needs. We fill our cup up by giving to others and yet simultaneously moan that we never get back what we give.

We lack in confidence and are insecure about ourselves and worry people will not like us so we try and make others feel good about themselves.

We strive for perfection to give the illusion that we are doing well in life and that we are not struggling. We do not want anyone to believe we are vulnerable because that means weakness to a lot.

So where do we start with self care? First of all we need to look at our current reality, just even contemplating what the words self care mean to you? Have you interpreted someone else's meaning of self care and it has not resonated? Ask yourself now 'what does self care mean to me?'

If you are stuck a few examples of self care are:

  • Exercising

  • Being outdoors

  • Sleep and rest

  • Reading

  • Listening to music

  • Moving your body

  • Nourishing your body

  • Meditation

  • Cold water therapy

  • Seeking a coach or therapist

  • Talking

  • Looking at old photographs/ take new ones

  • Saying positive affirmations

  • Drawing/ getting creative

  • Saying NO

  • Singing

  • Decluttering

  • Connect to your senses

Why should we participate in acts of self care? The main reason to improve your physical, mental and spiritual health. To limit stress and anxieties, to release fears and doubts, to enjoy life, to improve confidence, increase happiness, level up sleep quality, lowering the risk of major diseases and illnesses and most importantly because you matter.

No one is coming to save you, you must create change if you want change.

Be your own cheerleader and inspiration, you never know what may happen if you do.
