Is Hypnobirthing worth the hype?

What a big question... 'Is hypnobirthing worth the hype?'

Of course I am going to say YES! but let me first explain why. As most of you know I am an advocate of anything that helps improve your mindset and passionate about encouraging anyone who will listen to make positive changes for themselves, hypnobirthing is no different.

In recent years hypnobirthing has gained significant attention for being a method to promote calm, empowered and positive birthing experiences rather than just a 'woo woo' fad. Some may approach hypnobirthing with scepticism however the benefits are now becoming increasingly recognised by expectant parents and healthcare professionals.

Being a hypnobirthing practitioner I would encourage any pregnant person to be curious about learning and understanding why it is one of the most important parts of preparing for a baby.

Here are four compelling reasons that hypnobirthing really IS worth the hype:

  1. Reduces Fear and Anxiety - Hypnobirthing techniques such as breathing, positive affirmations and visualisation are all designed to promote relaxation and reduce fear surrounding pregnancy and childbirth. By learning and understanding how to practice these tools, birthing women can reduce the hormone adrenaline and increase oxytocin (the hormone essential in labour) leading to a more comfortable and positive experience.

  2. Enhances Partner Involvement - Hypnobirthing emphasises the importance the role of the birth partner to help support and encourage the birthing woman. Partners are encouraged to learn as much of the birthing experience as the mother to help assist with relaxation, provide emotional support and to advocate for the birthing woman's birth preferences. This active involvement strengthens the bond between partners whilst enhancing a sense of teamwork and power.

  3. Promotes Natural Pain Relief - Hypnobirthing encourages women to tap into their body's natural pain relief mechanisms. Via self hypnosis and relaxation techniques women can release endorphins (the body's natural pain killers) to help ease discomfort during childbirth and labour. This can create a sense of empowerment and euphoria.

  4. Supports Positive Birth Memories - Hypnobirthing allows birthing women to approach childbirth with confidence and trust in their body's natural ability to give birth, naturally or with intervention. During either experience the birthing woman has a knowing that they have mentally prepared themselves and been able to make choices important to them and their baby. This sense of empowerment can lead to a feeling of fulfilment event in the event of unexpected changes.

Hypnobirthing offers support, education and promotes confidence for any birthing person to have an experience that is important to them. By using hypnobirthing techniques you can reduce fears, worries and anxieties, enhance partner involvement, promote natural pain relief and facilitate positive birth memories by engaging and learning the techniques taught. Hypnobirthing is truly worth the hype for expectant parents especially those seeking a positive birth experience.
